Summer school tutoring are two options for such parents to consider. Tutoring comes in many shapes and sizes. There are reputable companies that specialize in developing math, reading, phonics and study skills. These companies usually have pre-designed courses organized by age, grade or ability. Through a variety of diagnostic tests and interviews they determine which course of study is best suited for each child. Class sizes and prices range according to demand. The advantage of seeking out two type of tutoring is that the companies can be checked out by the Better Business Bureau if any problems or dissatisfaction occur. Private tutoring is becoming a more popular way of getting kid's skills in check by providing personalized one-on-one help. The tutor is able to help students with homework, build on skills and concepts taught in school or run an individualized program like those found in tutoring companies. Problems may arise with this type of tutoring service, as the tutor has no specific guidelines or agenda from which to work. This means that the tutor must be carefully selected, ensuring that they have good, inventive ways of teaching, flexibility in determining hours and length of sessions and be able to determine the best course of action for each pupil. The advantages of Private Tutoring, when the right tutor is found are many, as the tutor may work at the child's own pace using any one of a variety of strategies in order to spark the pupil's enthusiasm towards learning. Costs of Private Tutoring vary from $30 - $40 an hour. Summer School is an option in high school and elementary level (in some Boards of Education). High School students are able to re-do courses they may have failed, or try something new. Elementary courses are usually confused to E.S.L., Language Arts or Math. These courses are all taught by qualified teachers. Some costs may now be associated with Summer School Courses. Look for the following signals that may indicate your child could benefit from some extra help: - poor organizational & study skills Parents should not feel guilty or unsuccessful if their child requires some extra help. As class sizes get larger & special programs are being cut, teachers may recommend help for students just beginning to show signs of academic weakness.
